Hawaii has a significant drug and alcohol abuse problem, more so because of its reputation as a vacation destination. People have the opinion that Hawaii has laxer rules than most American states and so they feel free to use alcohol and drugs within the state, but in reality, the state is no laxer than any other state on the American mainland.

One of the most prevailing ways of treating alcohol and drug abuse in Hawaii is to make teenagers aware of the problems that can come uninvited with alcohol and substance abuse. The awareness programs for drug and alcohol abuse in Hawaii are quite easily visible as soon as you step in the state, or even on the state health website itself. This is obvious in the form of various messages that are designed to deter people from using alcohol and illicit substances. These awareness programs usually start with the warning that substances such as cocaine, crack, heroin, marijuana, methamphetamine and several other substances are illegal in Hawaii, both for possession or for consumption. Another point that is stressed is the age limit for alcohol. In Hawaii, it is illegal to buy or consume alcohol if you are less than 21 years of age.

Statistics are also used to create awareness about drug and alcohol abuse in Hawaii. Points such as 98% of Hawaiians aged from 12 to 17 years have never used cocaine, 99.5% have never used crack and 86% have never tried marijuana are prominently displayed. Such awareness campaigns are certainly helping a great deal to cope with the problem of alcohol and drug abuse in Hawaii.
