Addiction Treatment Intervention in Young Adults

The main problem in addiction intervention treatment for young adults who are into substance abuse is convincing them that something is wrong with them and that they need treatment. There will be a strong denial in underage substance abusers, mainly because they do not think they are doing anything wrong.

They may look upon their addiction as an interesting way of life and may not want to come out of it.That is the reason addiction treatment in adolescents often follows a complex pattern which involves help from their family, sober friends, schoolteachers and other people who may be close to them. It may take as many as three to eight people to constructively aid in the intervention treatment of a young adult. Also, for an adolescent, intervention may be conducted in various types of settings – at home, in the school, in the interventionist’s office or even on the football ground if needed. The basic aim is to make the individual feel relaxed during the intervention and not consciously understand that some kind of treatment is going on.

Addiction intervention for young age adults is important because they are highly susceptible to try out new forms of addictions if they are not treated quickly. Adolescents usually begin smoking first (an addiction to nicotine), then graduate to alcoholism and then take up drugs. Marijuana is the commonest drug that adolescents use, but as they are a few months into the marijuana addiction, they may want to try out other drugs. It is very important that these problems are identified in adolescents as early on as possible, so that effective intervention can be done.
