Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Addiction in Teens

Alcohol abuse in teens is a growing problem, and in fact most of the alcohol rehab centers of the world report admitting younger and younger people with alcohol addiction issues as the days go by. It is not surprising to find children as young as 12 to 13 years in an alcohol rehabilitation clinic nowadays.
So what is driving children of such a tender age to the drink? The following are some vulnerability points:-1. Alcohol is a socially acceptable drink. As such, most kids have already seen alcohol and know that this substance is accessible to them. Probably all they have to do to get a drink is to go into the kitchen when no one’s looking.
2. From the conversations they overhear among their adults about the effects of alcohol, children also get a feeling of curiosity about the drink. They can’t wait to taste and find out about the thing that their elders speak so fondly about.
3. If a child has parents who drink, even at home, then the child himself or herself will also start out soon with the habit.
4. Most kids have friends that have already consumed alcohol. During night-outs and other such events, someone may actually bring a bottle to add pep to the celebrations. During such teen events, there’s always some kid that tastes alcohol for the first time, which may soon culminate into a lifelong habit.
5. Children who have a low sense of self-esteem try to emulate what they watch on television and follow the phrase ‘drowning my sorrows in the bottle’ too literally.
