Addiction Treatment Can’t Be Rushed

People in our society are accustomed to things that are easy and provide quick results. We have come to expect this in every area of life as a result of the computer age and fast rate of technology development.

The world of drug rehab programs is no different. Many addicts want to get the fastest and easiest form of addiction treatment and be on their way. Their family members and friends often have similar expectations. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation simply doesn’t work this way. It is a process that can’t be rushed if it is to be effective.Treatment programs that work provide both physical and psychological aspects, and both of these things take time. The physical part is called detox. It begins with a process of ridding the addict’s body of the toxins that have built up due to long-term abuse of drugs and alcohol. After that, the body needs to be rebuilt through a nutritional diet and exercise. Sometimes other methods like herbal remedies and massage are also used. It takes time for the individual to get used to living without drugs and alcohol in their body.

The psychological part of a treatment program is just as important. Most people don’t realize how much knowledge there is to gain from a quality rehab facility. This involves skills for building a new lifestyle, education about the nature of addiction and substance abuse, learning how to change one’s thoughts and behaviors, and analyzing the addict’s feelings and history. People can only retain a certain amount of information in a period of time.

It’s generally recommended that individuals with moderate to severe drug and alcohol addiction should stay in a residential rehab center for at least ninety days. Studies show this is the minimum amount of time to be most effective. It’s longer than most people want to stay, but addiction treatment is not a fast and easy process.
