Addiction Behaviors
There are many different characteristics which are associated with addiction. People suffering from drug and alcohol abuse tend to display many of the same behaviors. The following are some things commonly seen in addicts, though each person may not fit every criterion.
Denial
People who have alcoholism or drug addiction frequently claim that they don’t have a problem. They’re convinced that they can quit anytime they want to. If they do admit they have a substance abuse issue, they might claim that it doesn’t really affect them. Addicts use denial because they can’t admit the truth to themselves. The first part of recovery is overcoming this.
Selfishness
When some has an addiction, their life revolves around getting the drug or alcohol. Everything else in life, including other people, is second to their addiction.
Sneakiness
Addicts begin hiding their behaviors from other people so that they can continue in their addiction without being bothered, especially when others start to notice there’s a problem. They start drinking or using drugs alone, and they lie to cover it up.
Irresponsibility
Addicts are unable to be responsible because they’re too focused on their substance abuse problem. They cannot focus on any other responsibilities. This creates problems in relationships, job loss, and dropping out of school
Taking Risks
Risks are sometimes necessary for the addict to be able to get drugs and alcohol. Using these substances in itself is a dangerous behavior. They might also buy drugs from a dangerous place or use dirty needles.
Criminal Actions
It’s not unusual for addicts to have to break the law to get or use drugs or alcohol. This can include stealing, buying illegal drugs, drunk driving, etc. They might also become violent under the influence of certain drugs. It is common for addicts to eventually end up in legal trouble and jail if they don’t get addiction treatment.
