How Long Will Addiction Treatment Last?

Many people want to know ahead of time how long they will need to be in an addiction treatment program. It’s usually impossible to predict a certain amount of time before the individual actually enters rehabilitation. Many treatment centers don’t like to make a guess ahead of time because it’s so dependent on how well the addict responds to the program. Different individuals have very different needs in addiction treatment. What works wonderfully for one person can be completely ineffective for another. Generally, the longer an addiction has gone on and the more severe it is, the longer the person will need to be in some type of treatment program.

People who have only had problems with alcoholism or drug abuse for a short period of time may choose an outpatient treatment program. These typically last anywhere from three to five weeks. Experts caution that this type of program is only effective for mild cases. Not having a thorough enough rehabilitation experience is one of the biggest reasons why addicts relapse in the future, so it’s important to get sufficient help the first time.

Addicts with more severe problems will need a residential rehab facility. Stays at these centers generally last from two months to two years. That is a wide gap of time, but people have very different situations. If an addict has tried to quit in the past and relapsed, especially if this has happened many times, they will need more treatment than someone who hasn’t.

After the initial period of addiction treatment, it is usually a good idea to continue receiving some type of support. Depending on the severity and length of the addiction, this could be individual counseling, a support group, a sober living environment, or moving from a residential rehab facility to an outpatient treatment program.
